who we are
Tam Lay Lao is a self financed Laotian Textile Company. Our Vientiane workshops develop 100% silk and cotton products, mixing traditional expertise and creativity with special attention brought to the finish. Created in 2004, Tam Lay Lao was formerly an association based in Luang Prabang. Its aim was to promote high quality craftsmanship to the greatest number of people and to support a group of local weavers by finding middlemen for their products on the international market. For more visibility the organization was then transformed into a self financed Lao company, managed directly by the weavers.
what we do
Tam Lay Lao develops its creation and production with respect to five principles:
- The artisans' remuneration: The weavers, dressmakers and embroiderers get a large portion of the profits for their work.
- Traditional handicraft work: each item is made with great care and traditional expertise.
- Contemporary creations: We create an original range of items mixing simple lines, traditional patterns and fashionably vivid or pastel colours.
- Quality of the silk: Silk threads are selected from the best sericultures of the region and soften beautifully time after time. Cotton used for bed linen are selected from the highest quality cotton of the regional market.
- A selection of dyes: All our silk is dyed using European dyestuff produced in accordance with environmental and health standards, guaranteeing the colour will stay against washing and UV effect.
Today, Tam Lay Lao has 12 full time employees including weavers, dressmakers, manager and designer. We also provide secondary income for more than 10 embroiderers located in three villages around Luang Prabang.
