Lao Magic Carpets

who we are

Lao Magic Carpets

Carpet making is one of the oldest known crafts. Its roots lie in the heart of Central Asia where it developed and flourished before reaching its peak in quality in the 16th and 17th centuries. Magic Lao Carpets was set-up to introduce carpet weaving to Laos, where there is an established tradition of weaving intricate textiles. Through the skilful hands of local weavers and the use of local silk, the ancient craft of carpet weaving is taking a new direction in Laos.

Magic Lao Carpets  is combining the traditional weaving skills of Laotian women with the carpet weaving techniques of Central Asia. Our carpets and kilims are made to the highest standards of carpet weaving while incorporating authentic, original patterns inspired by traditional Lao textiles and crafts. Natural silk, coloured with natural dyes, is used to produce top quality hand-knotted carpets according to customer requirements.

what we do

Our vision is to establish a large-scale, village-based, handmade silk carpet industry in Laos. To achieve this, we have set up a training centre where weavers are taught how to design and weave carpets. When these skills are mastered, carpet making can become a good source of income for weavers and their families. A thriving carpet-making industry will also benefit Lao silk producers.

In the past three years, we have trained more than 100 experienced weavers in carpet making, over 45 of whom now work full-time for us. Working closely with the Lao Women's Union and other organizations, we target women from the neediest families and in the most underdeveloped areas.

In accordance with Fair Trade ideas, weavers are provided with free lodging, food, medical care and an above-average salary plus bonuses. We also plan to train many more women across Laos who can work in their own homes, using the materials and tools we supply, and help to market their carpets. We hope others in their villages will be drawn to carpet weaving and other aspects of production to develop a sustainable cottage industry.
